چکیده

INTRODUCTION In recent year, the design concepts of spinal implants alternation from traditional stable fusion to restore normal spinal range of motion (ROM). Therefore, the method of the spinal implants in vitro test was advanced from traditional load control method (LCM) to displacement control method (DCM) [1-3]. In real life, it is still not clear whether to use LCM or the DCM to evaluate the spinal implants. In this research, finite element analysis was used to see how motions difference at implanted level and both adjacent levels in fusion and non-fusion implants between LCM and DCM.

Load- and displacement-controlled finite element analyses on fusion and non-fusion spinal implants.

This study used finite element (FE) analysis with the load-controlled method (LCM) and the displacement-controlled method (DCM) to examine motion differences at the implant level and adjacent levels between fusion and non-fusion implants. A validated three-dimensional intact (INT) L1-L5 FE model was used. At the L3-L4 level, the INT model was modified to surgery models, including the artificial...

Experimental Evaluations of Intervertebral Disc Mechanics Following Posterolateral Fusion are Dependent on Testing Protocol

IntroductionNumerous studies have sought to quantify the biomechanical effects of posterior spinal fusion and disc arthroplasty; however, the results from these studies are conflicting. Additionally, the variety of techniques utilized during biomechanical testing complicates comparing results of instrumentation studies. Two distinct methods of experimental loading protocols have emerged to test...

Finite Element Studies on Friction Stir Welding Processes of Polyethylene Plates

One of the interesting state-of-the-art approaches to welding is the process of friction stir welding (FSW). In comparison with the fusion processes, FSW is an advantageous method as it is suitable for the non-fusion weldable alloys and polymeric materials joining. Regarding the materials pure solid state joining, it also provides joints with less distortion and enhanced mechanical properties. ...

Assessment of the suitability of biodegradable rods for use in posterior lumbar fusion: An in-vitro biomechanical evaluation and finite element analysis

Interbody fusion with posterior instrumentation is a common method for treating lumbar degenerative disc diseases. However, the high rigidity of the fusion construct may produce abnormal stresses at the adjacent segment and lead to adjacent segment degeneration (ASD). As such, biodegradable implants are becoming more popular for use in orthopaedic surgery. These implants offer sufficient stabil...

On the Displacement-Stress Continuous Finite Elements

For the analysis of composite media, three different compatible and mixed finite element formulations are presented which apriori enforce the continuity of stresses as well as displacements at the element interfaces. The formulations are applied for the analysis of hi-material interfaces in two problems often encountered in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics, that is the fixation analysis in...
